CX3 Wanted !

CX3 is not the latest sport car model from Mazda or Nissan or Toyota !

CX3 was a Computer Science Major at USL.

CX3 was East Main's most regular customer.

CX3 was a very cute but a bit tom-boyish girl.

CX3 was liked by everyone in East Main bcos she was the USL "News Anchor ".....
she always has the latest update about all gossips & rumours in USL !

CX3 was the ever-popular Computer Centre's Ke-poh Queen......
She spent a lot of time in the Computer Centre Ke-poh here Ke-poh there and all those computer science Freshmen in the Computer Centre liked her very much bcos she offered her consultation Free-Of-Charged !!
Got the problem getting the computer printout ? Just let CX3 know and she will "fly" to the Printing room window and SCREAMS at the student helpers !
Multice log in problem......let CX3 know and she will immediately rectify the problem.
I heard if there is a problem with the toilet bowl of the Computer Centre, you can also approach CX3 !
So you can see that CX3 was highly EQed and has a vast network of friends....and that is where she acquired all the latest gossip & rumours !
so & so has ditched so & so !
so & so has moved from Bangroft to UPA !
so & so has slept with so & so .
so & so was seen shopping with so & so at Target Mall.
etc
etc.
CX3 has all the answers to all FAQ !
So
who was this ever popular and famous everything also know CX3 ???
CX3 = C x 3 = C.C.C = Chua Chiew Chin !!!

We used to called her CX3 or Chua CC or just triple C !

CC was from Melacca and her sister was Chua Siew Lan.

CC's brother -in-Law ie Siew Lan's Husband was Teh Boon Yew but was neither related to Victor Teh nor Tee Boon Lye but he was our classmate at EE.

Taukay Sia in his previous post ( on Avery Island ) has requested me to write something abt this handsome & extra kind young man Boon Yew but I dun really have much to tell except that he had once donated one pair of newly bought spectacles to one of the poor blind old crab ( ketam buta ! ) at Avery island so that this poor old blind crab would be able to see the chicken neck clearly and quickly run away from being caught and cooked with Tony Talks !!!

To all the USL folks that went to New Iberia, Avery Island for crab catching ......

If you ever see one old crab that swim around with a pair of golden frame spectacles...

you should know who is the owner of that spectacles !

BL

p/s : Chua CC was last known to work with WJ Foo ( East Main very Regular and our EE classmate also ) at Rodime Harddisk Technology at AT&T building off Ubi Avenue. She was the System Analyst and WJ FOO was the Senior Test Manager. When Rodime closed down the plant in Singapore and moved to Bangkok, we lost touch with her.

To ChuaCC : if you ever visit this Blog and read this posting, plse plse remember to email BL & LS...your good old buddies that always enjoy gossipping with you until 4am in the morning !!!

Tony Lim..My Super-Duper Senior !

Two self initiated Malaysian Lims approached me to offer their sincere help when I first stepped onto USL in Fall 1981 :

1. Stevenson Lim.

He was the Boy's dorm Student Manager and he gave the first " lecture " to me immediately after my check-in to the dorm. He told me : " U are now in USA and to fully immerse into the American culture and fully integrated into the US society........ I have made u an arrangement......

I have arranged an OR-LANG as your room-mate ! "

Of course I accepted his " kind "offer of help..... but I quitted a day later bcos the dorm's bath room was on a common sharing basis and I really ashamed of my " size " after my first bathing experience with my room-mate Or-Lang !

2. Tony Lim.

Tony then was like Johnny Depp's " Pirates of Caribbean "'s Captain Sparrow.....anyhow dressed and had a front blacked tooth slightly " seng-get" one side.....but he always look smart & very savvy !

I first met him in front of Engineering Building....beside the iconic transistor structure with 5 legs ( FYI, all transistors are only 3 legged ! ).

" hi dude...u must be the freshman that passed all the advanced placement exams and got into Sophomor guy.....me name Tony from Penang and I am your EE SENIOR....graduating this Fall....come, let me give u my advice of success ! " so he said.

I really appreciate his help & of course, I accepted all his " secrets to success ".

Later, I was a bit puzzled bcos this Tony SENIOR also attended the Sophomor classes.....

At first I thought he was just sit-in so as to guide me ....

then one day, this DR GOLD of Fundamental Electrical Machine Professor asked Tony a question and Tony can not answer and the Professor said " hey Tony, u have been in this class for the past 3 semesters, how come still dun know ?? "

Then I started to learn a bit more abt this Tony SENIOR......

In 1981, Tony was the President of MSISA : Malaysian-Singapore International Students Association.

He really take care of all 1982 Freshmen that fly in from Malaysia or Singapore......

He asked alll the MSISA member who has car to ferry all freshmen from the Lafayette airport and Tony will be there to personally greet the new comers.

He put up his best smile and introduced himself " hi dude....me Tony from Penang...I am the EE SENIOR and graduating this semester ! " then without fail, he will hand out a piece of nicely printed paper that carry the wordings " VOTE FOR CHANGE ! VOTE FOR TONY LIM ! ! "

Anyway, Tony failed to secure 2025 popular votes, and he was out from 1982 MSISA nomination !

In the 80's, USL has a student population of abt 12,000.

Tony was then the SENIOR and he therefore seldom heel others.

However, Tony publicly declared and acknowledged that he only look upon & pay respect to THREE USL students :

1. Miss XXX from Sugai Petani, Alor Star, Kedah, Malaysia.

This Miss XXX was a big eyed Pretty young thing ( PYT ) that spoke with a deep ang-moh slang. She owned a Malaysian Tek-Kwan-Do Federation Black Belt Second "Dent" title !

She once demonstrated how powerful & death-killing stunt by doing a "3 metre Back Slash Flying Kick" over our famous blogger, Taukay Sia's head !!!

However, She managed to " fly" for only 1.5 meter & almost missed ! ( very lucky she did not miss...else no more this blog liao !! )

Why then this Tony pays this Miss XXX such a high respect ?

not bcos of her flying kick .....

not bcos of her ang-moh slang ....

but

bcos this dirty old SENIOR is trying to woo her !!!

When Miss XXX joined USL in Spring 1982, we started to observed that this Tony started to " in in out out " with her.... advised her the secrets of success in EE and of course at the same time, very helperfully carry her big & heavy shopping bags !

Tony even moved out from Boys' dorm and rented a 2-rooms at Richarf Dorm when Miss XXX's sister also joined USL in Fall 1983........he offered " FREE " room services to these PYT sisters !

( Gao-chow ! the Chinese call this tactic " if close to the window then can get the moon faster ! " )

I dun know what's the outcome of their courtship bcos I graduated in Fall 1984 and left USL in December while Tony SENIOR continue to "stay" back to do his long-termed PhD.

Little Note :

Miss XXX was back to Malaysia in 1985 and first joined IBM as with East Main's little mouse SL....she then jump-hopped to Tandem Computers and one year later, she was named to the Board of Directors of the Company. This was my last known facts abt Miss XXX.

Anyone else can provide further updates ??

So then

who were the other two fello that our Tony SENIOR highly regarded ??

Well, when Tony SENIOR moved to Richard Dorm with his PYTs, it was a well known & highly
publicized event. Every one in USL knows abt his "Guest posting" at his room.

His Dormitory door has a big sign board that carries the following message :

"
ONLY THE FOLLOWING AUTHORISED PERSONEL
ARE ALLOWED TO RING MY BELL AND
KNOCK MY DOOR :
1. The Acadiana police
2. The fireman
3. DHL postmaster
4. BOON LYE TEE &
5. LEE SAN HENG

"

Thank you Mr Tony, my dear EE SENIOR, for granting me such a prestigeous & High Honour !

BL

p/s : Mr Tony Lim, my dear EE SENIOR, if you happen to visit this blog and read this posting,
plse plse remember to email me.......I would very much like to catch-up with you and need
your valuable advice of how to apply for the Super Duper PhD programme in USL.
Dun Forget, OK ?? !!

MidSouth Wrestling

MIDSOUTH WRESTLING
Just received a mail from Francis (Used to be N...G..) looking for our Junkyard Dog. This East main JunkYard Dog is difficult to hunt down. So.... I ended up hunting down the original Junkyard Dog.
Most of you should remember the MidSouth Wrestling. We used to glue to Saturday or Sunday TV just to watch the MidSouth Wrestling. Our famous star was Junkyard Dog. The was the greatest at that time. He was always the good guy.
I will try to name a few:-
1) Junkyard dog
2) Jake the snake
3) Ted DiBiase later become The Million Dollar Man
4)"Hacksaw" JimDuggan The man always with a 2X4 stick
5)Ugandan Giant The Big Fat African man
6)Mr. Olympia the mask man
7)Andre The Giant The 8 wonder of the World
8)Kingkong Bundy The fat botak white man
9)The Iron SHeik THe botak Iranian always swing the 2 iron bars
10)Ric Flair The nature boy, I still see this "OLD" man in WWF
11)Dusty Rhodes
12)Terry Von Erich and brothers, Died @ 33yr 4 of 5 erich suicide @ young age.
I didn't remember all the above, I have done some search and list down the familiar one.
Maybe Mike can name a few more......

JUNKYARD DOG
by Jess McGrathSylvester Ritter, known in the wrestling world as Junk Yard Dog, died on June 2, 1998 in an auto accident nine miles east of Forest, MS. He was killed at 11:18 AM when he fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed his 1996 Nissan while driving on I-20 from Charlotte, North Carolina to his home in Yazoo, Ms. He was 45.

The Killing Slip.

As I mentioned in my previous posting, I worship the principle of " Having Fun " and practice the perfect execution of truancy & only do a lot of "work" on Study Day during my 3 years USL life.

But at the end of the day, I still have to face the judgement..........

the " cruel " reality of exam result announcement !

Two weeks after the semestral final exam, everybody will rush to the little love house to open the little love box .... all..... everyone except me !

I just dare not go bcos I know what I have done during the semester and there is no Santa Clause to give me nice present in the little love box to make my dae !

However, I have to go and open the love box and submit whatever I got to my old man, the "scholarship sponsor "..........else no more vitamin M coming to my rescue & that can be significant disaster worst than the Nagris Cyclone and Sichuan Quake !

So

normally, it will comes in this form :

With 200% remorsefulness and 300% cursingness......

I will hide myself behind the Pear tree beside the Church opposite the library, and .....

slowly ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

slowly ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I tear-opened the exam result slip with my 10,000% trembling hands ........

OOOOOOOOH SSSSSHIT !!!

BL

p/s : plse dun ask me abt the rest of the semesters.......they are all betta than Summer 84 !

My Action Dates.

As I mentioned in my previous post, the most important event in USL is to get yourself registered. After successfully registered, we,.... sorry.....should use " I " as not all USL students are like me ....
so smart........in executing truancy !
okay.... I will refer back to the USL Bible's calendar and draw up my " Action Plan " for the semester.........

The TOP TOP priority and TOP TOP action which I must include in my plan is......

when is the holidays !

So, as you can read , I will "high-light" in my little calendar,

1. Monday, September 6,1982 -----> Labor Day holiday ( funny....., it wasn't May 1 )

2. Wednesday, November 24 to November 28, 1982 ------> Thanks Giving holidays .

Then I will "mark " Wednesday, Dec 8, 1982 ----> the Study Day.

Now this date is quite TOP priority also bcos this is the day b4 final exam & normally I "execute" a lot of " Actions "..............

run all over USL campus.....make all possible phone calls.......knock every possible doors.....

so as to get all model answers to the previous assignments and tutorials which I have missed as the result of my perfect execution of truancy !!!

then I will go either library or the small vietnamese shop along Johnson street, to do the TOP TOP action.....

photostate all the model answers !!!

So, beside these TOP two important actions, I hardly look any further.........

what what exam lah, assignment deadline lah......all bo-cap !

Ang-Mo and " or-lang" always greet you with " how's dae.......have fun ! "

They neber say " have exam ! "

So do as the Roman does.......

my action is always " HAVE FUN !! "

BL

p/s :

I will normally seriously consider the following date as "important" :

Friday, October 15, 1982, ------> " the last day to drop with Grade of W "

You see, these Ang-Mo Us are very fair and democratic one.....
After registered and signed up all the subjects as advised by your advisor, you can either attend or totally not attend the classes ........
You can have many "valid & damn good" reasons for your absence...........:
you maybe " boey song" with the " sombong & stuck-up" old professor....
you maybe so tie down with partying and having fun that you simply forgot to go classes....
or maybe the Professor is of "torturing" , "killing" & neber give chance type......
then within the first 8 weeks, you are allowed to "drop" the subject and it will not kena your GPA.......
You are free to sign up again at later semester.
See, NO forcing one.....
you sukak, you continue.
you not sukak, you are free to go !
This is what I called
" Democracy ! "

The Bible of USL.

Every one in USL must buy.

Every one in USL must read.
Every one in USL must digest & know well ( the content ).
It is a MUST for every one who study in USL.
It is the USL " Bible ".
.............Yes, it is the USL Bulletin !

This Bulletin outlines everything that you need to know as a student in USL.

It covers

* A detail description of USL

* The Calender year
* Academic & Admin Affairs

* Courses offered & Faculty listing
* USL Rules & Regulations.

A sample of Calender is as below :

It is actually a detailed schedule of all important events of that particular semester.

Some fo the important dates that we must not miss are :

1. Registration

Registration is the utmost important " process " as it officially register you to that semester.

Since the Registration is so important, the USL admin will normally send out the following

" Gentle Reminder " thru your "love" box to remind you gently the dateline and to ask you to do it early early so as to avoid long long jam......

"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

Of course, as a "normal" student, we will "normally" ignore this kind of gentleness........

The process of registration starts with a long long Q to see your advisor so that he/she can advise you what what subjects to take so as you will not miss any what what subject as stated in the what what "Bible" and so that you can fulfill all what what requirements to qualify for the what what degree you are persueing in USL

After the so tedious long consultation ( sometimes 100 minutes....sometimes even 5 minutes can gao-tim....depending on the "age" of your advisor ) with your advisor, then the next thing very important is......

to pay the fees !

All fees and estimated expenses are given in the " Bible ".....

As you can read from the table, the fees per academic year for non-US resident undergraduate was

US$ 1172.50 in 1982 ie US$ 646.00 ( plus GSTax ) per academic semester.

( Note : what is the fees now ?? 5 times ? 10 times ?? I heard rumours say " off-spring " of USL alumni can get 50% discount....not sure how true it is.....appreciate if any one can verify...... )

So after the x'tra long long Q of paying the fees ( consequences of ignoring the gentle reminder.....), the cashier will give you this slip ........

And about a week later, you will receive the following time table for that semester .....

Once you have received this time-table, that means you have successfully registered for that semester and the registration process ends here.

You are now officially " ON " and "elligible" for the next important BIG move :

...............ready to play truant & SKIP CLASSES !!!!

to be continued.

Cajun food festival @ Singapore.

We had a small scale Cajun food festival in Singapore yesterday night ( 17 May 2008 ).

With courtesy of Taukay Sia & Taukay Soh ah Gan who kindly "donated" the genuine
cajun ingredients which they bought from Lafayette during their recent visit to USA,

We "managed" to successfully prepared the followig :

1. Seafood gambo cajun style

2. Jambolaya &

3. Etauffe
Can anyone from USL/ULL still remember the ever popular cajun seasoning spice call ?

Yes...... it is called " TONY TALKS !!! "

Its actual name is " TONY'S CHACHERES XXX " but we used to have a talkative yet very cunning middle-east classmate whose name was TONY ......

so to make fun & nick-named him and to make the spice easy to remember, so we East-mainners used to call this seasoning stuff " TONY TALKS !!! "

This TONY TALKS is a very unique, nice frangrance spice, one of its kind that you can not find elsewhere but in Louisiana state only.

So as usual, our Taukay Sia will address us by saying a prayer of " East Main Constitution section 153" which states that " Jit Lan Jit Pua, Kam Cheng Buay Sua. Jit Lan Jit Suku, kam Cheng Jia eh Ku (which simply means each one half half, love will flourish...each one one quater, love can last long long ) " that kind of bull-shit......

followed by popmally officiate the "makan" session !

Scramble Yeo wasn't in ....not too sure where he "blur" to.......

All of us have missed the Cajun food for over 25 years ! so within "split" second...

all foods kena wacked until Kosong Kosong....bottoms up !!!

BL-ingam.

p/s : this cajun dinner served as our first "rehearsal" to our upcoming grand
" USL East Main Reunion Party 2009" to be held X'mas Eve 2009.........
Check it out @ USLEASTMAIN.BLOGSPOT.COM. for more detail.
Die Die must come okay !!!!

Good old memory at Avery Island

There is this place 20miles from Lafayette, just outside Avery Island where we used to catch Crabs during week end. We really can't remember how many time we visited the place. All the East Main Full time member and Part timer knewthis place well.

After 24 years, I revisited the place again, the path way still there.
But the railway track is gone. We used to climb onto the track.

The Crabs still there, about the same size. I remember that Mike used to be the one who kill the Crabs. Just chop into half.. During that time it tasted better than our Black Pepper crabs now.
Hey, I found Boon You Glasses!!!! We need BL to tell the story.

Ah Lau .

Ah Lau was the nick name given to this AngMo in the middle.....
Alexandra is his real name.
He was our classmate and he was the oldest among us.......
He was already 49 with five children when he joined USL ....
He was originally a recording engineer with a music company &
according to him, he quitted his job to study so as to keep abreast of
changing technology.

I am now also 49.
you want me to study again ?
I think I betta die !

BL-ingam.
p/s : I think AngMo got a betta life-long study attitude.....as for me...spend all
24X7 trying to make ends meet.....where got time & $$$ to study ????

St. Joseph House

I was staying in this unit.
Mr. Gan, Mr. Oh staying this unit. AngMo staying downstair.

We used to have a group staying at St. Joseph Street. I think most of you should remember a girl called Anita!! who used to stay with US(not "ME" ). We had Mr. Gan, Mr. Oh, Mr. Pang( ??), who else .. as our neighbours. We had a group of Malay living downstair and they could just sang and play guitar throughout the whole night. Once I was so annoyed and I had to use a stick to hit on my floor (their ceiling) to get them to keep quiet. Luckily they moved out a few months later and a nice Malay couple moved in. We also had a group of Indian Malaysian staying on the other side of our apartment. I believed one of them worked in Donino's. A year later, I moved out from that area to East Main to became a EMAINNER.
Sia

B4 Carina....

This picture was taken in winter 1982 @ Jackson Square, New Orleans.
It was taken before Carina strikes in 2006 !!
So it was 26 years ago !!!
That simply means
these 6 then beautiful xiao-new are
probably ALL OLD-NEW NOW !!!
How times flash !!!

p/s (1) : I really missed Leong Bee Eng, my Kluang Town mate & Sec school-mate....
She got married to this Boy's Dorm's Yap Sam Choon & I heard rumors say

Anyone can provide her contact ??

p/s (2) : Of course, I would also never forget Bee Eng's good old buddy .... the one that like

The Restaurants along I-10.

I believe all Malaysian/Singaporean studied in USL do travelling during the summer holidays.
Back then ( 1981 - 1984 ), when we travel, we were so impressed by the US high way....eg I-10 ( bcos in those years, Malaysia still have not construct the N-S highway yet.) ..............
especially the "rest area" ( ie tempat berhentian ). These so called "rest area " are trully well equipped.....comes with toilet, detergent, table & chairs.......and even the provision of power points for shaver & dryer !

We certainly love these "rest areas" a lot bcos they served as our "budget" Rest-aurants !!!

East Mainners normally work 24X7 during the first 6 weeks of summer holiday...and with the
hard-earned money saved, we will spend them all on travelling during the last 2 weeks of summer.
To maximise the ultilization of our hard-earned money, most of the time, we will opte for
"budget travelling ".......we will cooked & eat at the Rest-aurants on every meal !!
With the power points provided at these rest areas, what we need is to bring along our "barang" "barang"....rice cooker la, kettle la, cooking utensiles la, wok la, chopping board la, & even cups & plates !
& normally, we will cook simple & light meals like baked beans , luncheon meat & sardins so as not to "over-load" these power points and causing fires at these "Rest-aurants" along I-10 !!

I remember there was this time that we are going to Washington, so Ah-Mike & myself were asked to buy the food stuff....
So we went grocery and bought abt 3 dozens cans of sardin at Albertson............
at the check out counter, the fatso lady got a rude shock when she saw us carry so many cans of sardins......
after a while, she then seems to realise something and she said to us :

" oh yeah......you vietnamese do like to keep a lot of cats....certainly you need a lot of sardins to feed them ! "

$@*&&^%$+))(***&&&^^%% !!!!!!

I rest my case.

Pre-East Main Period!

First Chinese New Year in USL! Photo taken 07/02/81

Dated: Spring 81' ~ Summer 81

Place: Caffery Dorm, Stoke B

Member: LouSai (President), PoohToh, Ah Mike, BoonTeck(Siao eh), Sia.

First semister in USL, most of the earlier East Mainner and myself stay in the dorm. We(Mike, Poohtoh, Siao Eh, LouSai) shared "kitchen" in LouSai Room. We cooked on every Saturday and Sunday when cafeteria was closed. Somehow it didn't work out for long as Siao Eh did not follow Kitchen's rule! We started quarrel and ended up Kitchen closed.
